What do you do for a vacation when you’re a part-time working, homeless, bike racing bum? Well, you quit riding your bike and work full-time. That’s exactly what I’m doing. What better way to spend my down-time recovering from the 24 hour?
I’m working at Roaring Mouse, the first shop I worked at and whose owner took me on my first mountain bike ride just about four years ago. Good times.
I took the exam to become a California subsitute teacher, which is my latest scheme to fund this ridiculous racing campaign. Fingers crossed.
I’ve gone riding a couple times on some of the killer trails in Marin but it’s nice to have some time to just chill, ride for fun and not think about training. (Not that I don’t absolutely love it. It’s still nice to have a break).

Nuremberg’s St. Sebald Church
Published by admin, under Germany. No Comments.
Most people know the namesakes for the world’s most famous churches. St. Paul’s Cathedral is named after St. Paul. St. Peter’s Basilica is named after…yes, St. Peter. But Nuremberg’s oldest pilgrimage church carries the name of a saint even devout people may not know - St. Sebald. He’s the patron saint of Nuremberg, and his relics rest in a golden tomb under a magnificent bronze canopy in the church. Who was St. Sebald, and what did he do to be so honored? (more…)

Why Go On Holiday To Menorca?
Published by admin, under Information on Menorca. No Comments.
Menorca holidays are becoming increasingly popular amongst those who are looking for a relaxing, sun filled break. It is the second largest of the Balearic Islands and is located in the Mediterranean Sea off the south east coast of mainland Spain. This means that if it’s sun and beaches you are after it is definitely what you are going to get.
Although the island has seen a massive increase in the number of tourists over recent decades, it still remains relatively unspoilt and quiet. This means that Menorca holidays are peaceful and relaxing which is just what you need to get away from the stresses of everyday life.
If you are looking for livelier Menorca holidays then the south coast of the island is for you. The most popular resorts are located around that area and have all been purpose built especially for tourists. You definitely will not be short for things to do in the south of the island as there are beaches, bars, restaurants, water sports and much more to keep you entertained.
If your idea of Menorca holidays is something a bit more chilled out and quiet, then you will be ideally suited to the north coast of the island. This area is very picturesque with horse shoe bays and beautiful scenery. This means that this part of the island is perfect if you are looking for a romantic getaway or a family holiday.
Regardless of what kind of break you are after there is plenty to do while on Menorca holidays. Many people enjoy climbing the only real mountain on the island, Mount Toro, and the 17th Century Sanctuary of the Mare de Deu del Toro is another popular tourist attraction. The island is very easily explored by car as there is very little traffic around the island. This means that you are free to explore at your own pace and don’t have to worry about confusing public transport.
It is hardly surprising that Menorca holidays are so popular amongst people from all over the world. There is plenty to see and do for people of all ages and interests. From groups of friends who are looking for excellent nightlife, couples who are looking for some romance and families who are looking for a relaxing break, there is something for everyone. The best part about it is that it’s complimented by mild temperatures and sun pretty much all year round.

i’ve made a list…
Published by admin, under knitting. 5 Comments.
the anxiety of leaving for a week is still there, but it’s dulled by my supercomprehensive list of everything i need to take with me - am i forgetting anything? ten points to anyone who can come up with something i need to take that i don’t have on my list…
this is the first time in a long time that i have gone away somewhere for a week straight. ireland was 7 days, but it was mid-week to mid-week, so it was a little different, plus in those 7 days we stayed 3 different places, so this should be much more relaxing. there’s no real schedule or anything. i can’t wait. hiding from the world for a big fat week, surrounded by my immediate family members who love me more than anything.
i will miss this face, however, more than i can even imagine, i’d guess:

so, as of 3:45 this afternoon, i’m out of the office until july 14th, baby. i imagine it will help me detatch and take some much needed time and space, and it will also allow me to relax and knit and enjoy the fam and the sunshine and the yarn shops in the area and all sorts of loveliness. the place is large enough that we should have no problem enjoying each other’s company for a week straight as we won’t all be on top of each other. i can feel the stress melting away, already.
there will be dial up and i’m taking a laptop, but i can’t promise i’ll have the patience to pop in much. i can send photos right to my flickr from my phone, though, so that might see some action…
have a lovely and safe independence day, everyone. mucho content upon my return, if not before!

Published by admin, under Travel Industry News. 1 Comment.
For those of you who missed it, Wego.com was featured this morning in the “Surf Time” segment of Channel NewsAsia’s “Primetime Morning” show. The segment was aired twice and simulcast both on CNA and Channel 5. Catch the video here:
My only complaint was they didn’t show any ‘live’ searches nor anything about Hotels.

Homewood Suites in Mobile, Alabama
Published by admin, under Travelogue. No Comments.
We’re at Homewood Suites in Mobile, Alabama. We rose this morning and went to the Louisiana Arts and Science Museum in downtown Baton Rouge. They had several interesting exhibit, including some pastels on paper by Will Henry Stevens, a modernist who worked in Louisiana. I’d never heard of him, but I did like some of his art.
After Baton Rouge, we decided to have salad for lunch, and ate at a famous American restaurant I won’t mention. With lunch in us, we hit the road for Mobile. Unfortunately, it was a bit late to appreciate the coastal route, so we came straight here.
Once here, we hit the web to see what might work for dinner. We ultimately decided on the Original Oyster House. IMO, it didn’t live up to the billings. The shrimp I had was all overcooked. Katie’s shrimp fettuccini Alfredo was good, but the beans and rice side dish had sausage in it. So much for avoiding red meat.

WITH Travel Award 2008 - A Call for “New Voices” in Technological History
The SHOT Special Interest Group Women in Technological History [WITH] announces its travel grant for 2008. The purpose of the award is to encourage participation of “new voices” at the annual meeting of the Society for the History of Technology [SHOT].
The 2008 meeting will be held in Lisbon, Portugal, October 11-14, 2008 (See http://www.historyoftechnology.org/annualmtg.html)
“New voices” seeks topics or perspectives underrepresented in SHOT, and invites scholars from underrepresented constituencies, geographic and cultural. Eligibility for the WITH Travel Award is open to individuals who are giving a paper at the SHOT annual meeting. Graduate students and other scholars new to SHOT are particularly encouraged to apply for the award. Seeking to foster exchange of ideas among cultures and to help broaden the intellectual scope of our field, the WITH Travel Award will support papers that especially consider questions of ethnicity, gender, and modes of difference in the history of technology, and scholars who come from non-US and non-Western venues.
The award will include registration for the Lisbon meeting, a year’s membership to SHOT and WITH, the WITH breakfast or lunch, the graduate student breakfast (if appropriate), and the awards banquet; the balance of funds will be allocated to travel expenses.
Priorities for the WITH award will go to:
- a scholar or graduate student new to SHOT belonging to a group underrepresented in SHOT, whose paper addresses issues of gender, race, ethnicity, and/or difference in the history of technology;
- a non-US, non-Western graduate student or scholar new to SHOT presenting on any topic.
The WITH award is to be granted to individuals who are giving a paper at the SHOT annual meeting. Deadline for papers-proposals for the SHOT 2008 annual meeting is March 14, 2008, for further information please see http://shotnews.net/?p=401.
