I was passing through New Haven, Connecticut the other day, and was pleasantly surprised by the beauty of its train station. Just two hours by Metro-North commuter train from New York City, or just over an hour and half on Amtrak, the station (and city) is easily accessible. And in case, the rails aren’t working or you’re traveling to or from points not on a railroad, the station doubles as a bus station, and there’s a Greyhound ticket counter within the station, in addition to counters for Amtrak and Metro-North. The station is also served by Shoreline East, a commuter rail line running between New Haven to New London, CT. (Metro-North’s service from New York City terminates in New Haven.)

New Haven Union Station, 25 July 2008

Designed by noted architect Cass Gilbert (think NYC’s Woolworth Bldg, US Supreme Court Bldg, and the Minnesota Capitol), the station opened in 1918, and is the premier gateway to the city, carrying by far more passengers to and from New Haven than the city’s airport, Tweed New Haven. At Tweed, the sole carrier is US Airways, with daily service to/from the airline’s hub at Philadelphia.

Tweed Airport aside, we’re talking about the train station here! And you can indeed earn frequent flier miles getting here. Continental Airlines offers a code-share with Amtrak for service connections at Newark Airport. Thus if you fly into Newark, you can catch an Amtrak train adjacent to the airport, which will take you to New Haven. You must, of course, book the trip through to New Haven, and not Newark/NYC. The “airport” code for the New Haven Train Station is ZVE and you still earn Continental OnePass’ minimum 500 miles per segment on the rail portion.

CebuAsia: Balay Na Tisa | Clee Villasor photography

Built during the heydays of the Spanish lore and rule (circa 1859) in Carcar, Province of Cebu, Philippines, this terra-cotta roofed manor house (a.k.a. Balay Na Tisa) was owned by one Don Sarmienta along Sta. Catalina St. It is just a stone’s throw from the 1876 Graeco-Tuscanian style church of St. Catherine of Alexandria (I will post this later).

View On Black

It is one of the few well-preserved remaining houses, of its kind, in Cebu, spanning four generations. This heritage site houses the artifacts during its time: priceless antiques of silver and ceramics and furnitures made of tindalo wood of the Sarmiento family. Not far from this place is the famous Noel House (or the Big House) where Gen. Leon Kilat was killed six days after his glorious victory against the Spanish invaders at Tres de Abril, Cebu City.

My beautiful little Sunshine seemed quite delighted to meet her Grandma (me!) over Memorial Day weekend, and Grandma was sure delighted to meet her! At just over two months old she’s fat and happy, quite mellow for a wee thing who doesn’t much like being so little. As long as she’s kept close and high enough to look big people in the eye, she’ll let loose that dazzling smile and tell stories for as long as we’ll listen to the coos and gurgles and guffaws.

My grandsons are pretty much grown (#1 just turned 18, #2 turns 18 in July), it’s a little hard to remember that they were ever that small. #1 was even smaller, just six and a half pounds when he made his appearance in the world. Miss Sunshine already understands in no uncertain terms that she is the Princess of the Universe, and fully expects deference from all to that lofty title. Which, of course, her parents, grandparents, aunts and cousins are all most eager to provide in abundance!

#1 grandson surprised me by walking out to the car when they arrived, taking the baby confidently from Mom, and proceeding with her to the house talking all the while about why he’s going to call her “CoolAss Mojo” no matter what anybody else says her name is, and imparting cousin-like advice on what the world is like and how truly cool it is. It reminded me of the fact that my husband and I were just 18 when our daughter was born, and I had to realize that it probably won’t be too long before I get to welcome a GREAT-grandchild into the family. Whoa!!!

I did manage to finish that quilt finally. It wasn’t as big as I’d have liked, so I batted it double-thick and used pink fleece on the back side to compliment the purple I used around the squares on the front (because I started it before I knew Sunshine was a she, and purple is what I had on hand). Daughter was very pleased, and that’s what counts.

With gas prices going up fast we may not see them again for awhile. We’d go north to see them, but must go west to visit Mom-in-Law this summer instead - if we can afford even that. She’ll be 86 in August, the only parent we’ve got left, and we’ve got to make some arrangements so she won’t be living alone. Grandson #2 will be coming up to see us in July (and will hopefully NOT tangle with a copperhead this time), and #1 is going to have to go to the local community college at least his first year because costs at the university have doubled since he applied.

Perhaps things economic will get better soon. Despite being old enough to get jaded, new life always tends to make things look a lot more hopeful. All I know right now is that Little Miss Sunshine is sure happy to be here, and Grandma is sure happy to meet her!

When we talk about Las Vegas, there are a lot of hotels that have been functioning great in there and you cannot deny that fact. Now, when we also talk about Luxor hotel, we can really be on the traffic jam with the Luxor Hotel Coupons that they are offering so they can give a privilege to the people who always wanted to visit the place and who can almost see the place as if they are getting it at a regular basis. With the coupon that you will have, you can really save and have so much for other thins and you cannot just be staring blankly in there and not to do anything in the place. When you get to read the information about Luxor hotel in the Las Vegas Hotel reviews where you can see at www.earlyvegas.com, you will really be surprised and astounded at how they are giving you the benefit that not all of us can get. So, if you are given this chance, grab it while it is there so you can also enjoy yourself for that and you can be very happy about that. Now, if you have these coupons on hand, you might as well get a leave and escape your way to Las Vegas. Sneak in and feel at home in the place where you will be treated V.I.P.

After much discussion and thinking and internal crying, Crystal and I have decided to postpone our upcoming trip to Buenos Aires. The timing just isn’t good for either of us.
